About our home on Austin Road and Hatteras Village

Welcome

Thank you to all of our guests. For many families, this is your fourth or fifth year visiting, and some of you have spent every summer season with us. We truly cannot thank you enough for choosing our home and for making it part of your family traditions.

We hope you enjoy your stay.

After 20 years of renting cottages on Hatteras Island ourselves, we finally decided it was time to build a place of our own. Hatteras Village—known simply as “the Village”—has always been a special place for us, and we hope it becomes just as special for you.

We wanted to create a home where families could relax together, bring their dog, enjoy a quiet street, and cool off in the pool after a day at the beach. After searching throughout the Village for the right location, we found Austin Road and knew it was the perfect spot to build.

From here you can see the sound, catch glimpses of the ocean, and at night the beam from the lighthouse sweeps across the sky. Those simple things are what made this little corner of Hatteras our happy place.

To help you find what you need while you are here, we created this site along with Explore Hatteras Island: Your Ultimate Beach House Guide as a guide to the Village and the island.

Life here moves at a slower pace. The Village isn’t full of hustle and bustle—in fact, many of us jokingly call it “the end of the earth.” Once you unpack, sit down on the porch with a deck chair, or relax by the pool in the bright Hatteras sun, you might find yourself thinking that even a short drive to Frisco feels like too much effort.

That said, there are many kind and welcoming people who run the local shops and restaurants here in the Village and throughout the island who will gladly help you find whatever you need during your stay.

About Our Neighborhood

Most of our neighbors are members of the Austin family—just as the road sign suggests. Their family has lived here for generations and once ran a commercial fishing business from this area.

Many of them are now retired from the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and the North Carolina Ferry system—as you might expect from people who grew up on the water.

The creek that runs up toward the road once extended all the way back to Durant Station, the site of the large condominium you can see down NC-12. Years ago, the Coast Guard brought supplies up that creek on barges to the lifesaving station that once stood nearby.

Later, the same lifesaving station became the site where General Billy Mitchell built an airfield to experiment with airborne ship bombardment—an early chapter in the history of military aviation.

We ask that you please respect our neighbors while you are here. You may notice horses in the paddock behind the pool next to the house. While they are beautiful to watch, please do not walk into the paddock. If you happen to see them riding down the road in the early morning, they’ll be happy to wave hello.

Most people here start their days early, so we kindly ask that you do not park in the driveway , so they can easily get out in the morning.

Thank you for helping us keep Austin Road the quiet and friendly place that makes the Village so special.
